Premature increase of the NHIS tariff by 20% – Government

The government said the proposal for a 20% upward adjustment of the tariff for NHIS service providers is a bit premature as negotiations are still under way to achieve the right increase that service providers deserve.

In an interview on the proposal communicated to the Daily Graphic by the Director General of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Samuel Annor, at the end of a stakeholder meeting with service providers to Accra last Thursday, the Minister of Information, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said that the government had already established its budget for the year, so that the national resource was already committed.

"A committee has been set up to look at what service providers deserve and negotiations are ongoing.

"We have to go through processes and calculations, then go back to the highest level before we can quantify that," he told Graphiconline.

Dr. Samuel Annor told the Daily Graphic last Thursday that the proposal was subject to negotiations with service providers and subsequent approval by the Ministry of Health.

The fee represents fees paid to service providers per visit to an NHIS-accredited facility. The exam is performed annually to reflect the changing prices in the market.
