An epidemic of swine flu in Morocco left nine dead last week, the kingdom's health minister said on Saturday.
The spread of the H1N1 virus was "normal" for the period of the year, said Anas Doukkali, quoted by the Moroccan official press agency MAP.
The first death in Morocco caused by the flu-like virus was reported Wednesday by local media, since anxious rumors have spread on social media.
"Vigorous efforts continue to detect possible cases in various hospitals in the kingdom," said government spokesman Mustapha Khalfi.
H1N1 flu is a respiratory illness contracted by human / pork contact and transmitted by inhalation.
A major outbreak of H1N1 has triggered a pandemic alert from the World Health Organization in June 2009. It killed about 18,500 people in 214 countries before the alert was lifted in August 2010.
