Ghanaian police said that its Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had opened an investigation to identify the gunmen involved in the La-Bawaleshie shootings during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election on Thursday, January 31. 2019.

"Investigations are underway to identify those who have shot dead," Ghana's police chief, Superintendent Sheila Kessie Abayie-Buckman, said in a press statement on Friday, February 1, 2019.

A group of macho men, believed to be security guards, fired into the crowd at JHS's La-Bawaleshie polling station, injuring some people.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), the main opposition party, withdrew from the elections due to the shooting. During the scrum, Ningo Prampram MP Sam Nartey George was also badaulted by hooded and totally masked security agents.

Police revealed that the number of injured victims had reached 13 and that statements had been made about the victims.

"A team of investigators from CID headquarters visited yesterday at Legon and in 37 military hospitals [Thursday] and met a total of 13 people receiving treatment for various injuries, including gunshot wounds, "the statement added.

The police subsequently asked the public to disclose any information related to the incident in order to expedite investigations.
