Ghana's Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Catherine Abelema Afeku, has been appointed Chair of the United Nations Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Working Group on Leadership.
The announcement was made at the first meeting of the Leadership Working Group that was held on January 25, 2019 at UNWTO headquarters in Madrid, Spain.
His new appointment describes his total involvement in tourism, not only in Ghana, but around the world.
A letter signed by the Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization of the United Nations, Zurab Pololikashvili, and addressed to Ms. Afeku stated: "It is with great pleasure that I learned of your appointment to the Unanimity in chairing the working group on leadership ".
Mr Pololikashvili added: "I would like to extend my warmest congratulations and wish you every success and a great personal satisfaction in your new responsibilities as President for the next two-year term."
Ms. Afeku also expressed her optimism and added: "Personally, I am expecting collaboration between UNWTO and Ghana for the Regional Congress on Women's Empowerment in Africa in the Tourism Sector, to be held from 25 December 27 in Accra, Ghana. November 2019. "
The UNWTO congress, he explained, will play a crucial role in the Sustainable Development Goal 20 (SDG 5) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which aims to "achieve gender equality and to empower all women and girls.
It will also address one of the key priorities of the WIPO Africa Program to Empower Youth and Women through Tourism, in line with Sustainable Development Goals 5, 8 and 10. .
In response to her appointment, Catherine Afeku expressed her enthusiasm for her new role.
"I feel very honored, humbled and delighted to be named Chair of the United Nations Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Leadership Task Force. This appointment is important to me as Minister of Tourism as it will allow me to continue to spread Ghana's rich culture while continuing to work with my colleagues from other countries around the world, "she said.
