The Accra West region of the Ghana Electricity Company (ECG) has announced that it has recovered $ 5,288,148 from 2,550 customers who illegally used electricity without paying.
The recovery was carried out from January to December 2018, according to the electricity distributor.
This amount represents a 28% increase over similar recoveries made in 2017 and represents a total of 5,033,799 kWh of electricity.
Mr. George Appiah-Kubi, Regional Director General of the ECG in Accra West, announced Wednesday in a statement that the funds had been recovered as a result of a large revenue protection campaign launched in the region. last January.
He said the campaign was aimed at ridding the system of illegalities and theft of power, which deprived the Company of huge amounts of revenue.
"We have formed a special revenue protection team to visit and verify the authenticity of the electrical connections of all facilities in the region," he said.
"The team, among others, discovered customers who were illegally using power."
"Records of these customers have been recorded and they have been billed to pay the cost of Power they had used illegally, "he said.
Mr. Appiah-Kubi said that as a result of the successes recorded during the 2018 campaign, the revenue mobilization exercise would be stepped up this year to achieve a zero percent rate of theft in the region. .
During this year's exercise, he added, in addition to overburdening a customer for unpaid energy consumption, he would work with security agencies to prosecute anyone found guilty of stealing energy.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ebenezer Yao Fiador, head of income protection in Accra for the ECG, warned against any temptation to steal and urged the public to voluntarily disclose information about illegal connections.
He badured the public that the identity of the persons providing credible information would be protected and that those informers paid a percentage of the amount recovered.
Mr. Fiador highlighted the negative effects of the theft of electricity on ECG's operations, including the delay in paying energy producers for electricity sold to the distributor.
This, he said, has prevented the company from undertaking regular projects to improve and expand the system.
West Accra region of GEC has seven operational districts; Kaneshie, Korle-Bu, Dansoman, Ablekuma, Nsawam, Bortianor and Achimota.
