Spotify could be in discussion to acquire Gimlet Media and its list of beloved podcasts, including titles such as Reply to all and Crimetown.
Peter Kafka, of Recode, reported Friday that the streaming music giant is currently courting Gimlet for a deal worth more than $ 200 million, citing unnamed sources. Kafka noted that the acquisition would be important for several reasons, the first being that it would be Spotify's first foray into buying a company that makes content. But it would also be a huge contract for podcasts, another example being the acquisition of Stuff Media by iHeartMedia last year under a much less ambitious $ 55 million contract.
Spotify declined to comment on the report. Gimlet did not immediately return a request for comment.
The announced agreement appears to be in line with Spotify's long-term goals. For several years, Spotify has been presenting podcasts on its platform, but Courtney Holt, head of studios and video company, told a panel at the Consumer Electronics Show that earlier this year, Spotify was considering expanding its current offer of podcasts.
"When we launched the initiative, we achieved several things," Holt said. "One is that we are an excellent audio platform and we want to focus on the best audio experience. We found that podcasting was an excellent complement to our music service. "
He added that while looking at the data, "people who consume podcasts on Spotify consume more of Spotify, including music." It is therefore wise to focus its energies on the development of its podcasts for streaming music service, as well as an acquisition of this caliber. . Kafka also noted that while Apple is currently supreme in this area, "Tim Cook's company does not seem to spend much time or energy on podcasting."
For what it's worth, Gimlet podcasts like Reply to all and Crimetown are already available to broadcast on its platform. So, if you prefer to broadcast these podcasts on Spotify, the good news is that you do not have to wait for the advertised contract.
