Farmers protested to express dissatisfaction over sale of cocoa land
Cocoa farmers from 5 communities of the Ejisu municipality in the Ashanti region and from eastern regions are asking the supreme leader of Ejisu NAna Oguakro Afrane Kese IV to make a decision. he got the blessing of Asantehene Otumfuo for the land, a "fraud" of lands on which he perpetuates them.
About 2,000 cocoa farmers told a news conference that the chief was at risk of a bloodbath for his attempt to sell 5,000 hectares of cocoa land owned by them.
The aggrieved peasants of communities like Onwe-Amoadu, Abenase, Edwenase, Asapong and Odaho insist that they will not remain indifferent and will be deprived of their only means of subsistence, cocoa farming.
Farmers dressed in war songs and songs of war last Friday, February 1, 2019, observed MyNewsGh.com, demonstrated to express their dissatisfaction with the sale of cocoa land, accusing Nana Oguakro Afrane Okese IV, supreme head of The traditional region of Ejisu, Onwe Nana Asokwah Danka Gyeabour II chief is responsible for the sale of land.
Injured farmers spokesman Kwabena Boateng, speaking in Kumasi media, said 5,000 hectares of cocoa should be destroyed to build houses.
According to Kwabena Boateng, cocoa farmers would have learned that their land was sold to the Free Trade Zone Authority of Ghana without prior consultation with those who would be involved in the act.
"Ejisuhene and Onwehene told us that our farmland had been sold to the Free Trade Zone Authority of Ghana. After our investigations, what they told us was not true. We went to the main office of the Ghana Free Zones Authority in Accra and they told us it was not true. They (Ejisuhene and Onwehene) want to sell our farmland to get rich. We will not allow this to happen until they kill us all. Can Ghana survive without cocoa? Houses and cocoa, which gives the most revenue to Ghana? Kwabena Boateng asked.
He therefore called Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and President Akufo-Addo to help them.
The queen mother of Apenkra Nana Akua Agyemang, who spoke with MyNewsGh.com, warned Ejisuhene Nana Oguakro Afro Okese IV not to intimidate cocoa farmers and residents of the traditional Ejisu region.
According to Nana Akua Agyemang, the land belongs to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and not to Ejisuhene Nana Oguakro Afrane Okese IV.
"Afrane Okese should let cocoa farmers do their work for the good of this country. I ask Afrane Okese to stop intimidating people and not selling land to get rich. Asanteman lands belong to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. Otumfuo has the power to sell land, not Afrane Okese. Cocoa farmers will not leave today or tomorrow. I will continue to support cocoa farmers, "said Nana Akua Agemang.
She however appealed to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for her to intervene and call Ejisuhene Nana Oguakro Afrane Okese IV in order to avoid a menacing bloodbath.
All attempts to speak to Ejisuhene Nana Oguakro Afro Okese IV have been in vain. But we realize that his palace plans to publish an official statement in response to the claims of cocoa farmers.
