DENVER (AP) – Irv Brown, a Final Four referee who also coached baseball at the University of Colorado, commented in color on the first ESPN broadcast on college football and was the pioneer of sports radio in Denver, died Sunday. He was 83 years old.
Brown's nephew confirmed the death.
In a statement sent late Sunday afternoon, the Colorado Buffaloes said Brown had died from a complication of an aggressive form of lymphoma diagnosed last Wednesday.
Brown
officiated in four of UCLA's Final Fours
in the 1960s and 1970s. He built a strong working relationship with everyone from Bob Knight to Dick Vitale,
Brown had the whistle for his last appearance as coach at the NCAA Tournament in 1977.
Brown was on talk radio in Denver and worked with long-time partner Joe Williams on four-decade broadcasts.
He also coached baseball in Colorado prior to the closure of this program in 1980.
Always fast with a tip
he once said, "I did baseball CU what it is today. Faded away."
Brown was participating in the first ESPN college football television show, a match between Colorado and Oregon in 1979.
