Tonga's Internet network will be operational again on Wednesday.

Tonga's international submarine cable television network will return to service on Wednesday, February 6, CEO for Tonga Cable Ltd., Etuini Liava'a Tonga Matangi Tonga this afternoon.

The cable connects Tonga to Fiji.

Etuini said that in the meantime, repair of the damage to the cable linking the network connecting Sopu, Nuku'alofa, Ha'apai and Vava'u will be completed on Tuesday. Tonga's international submarine cable network will be operational again on Wednesday.

The cause of the breaks of two cables, the tension cable and the network cable, which were combined to form the cable network connecting Tonga to Fiji; and the voltage and network cables connecting Nuku'alofa to Vava'u and Ha'apai have not been confirmed by the authorities, although there is some speculation.

The total cost of repairing the breaks has not been finalized, but Etuini said the bill would go to Tonga Cable Ltd.

This multi-million dollar project was funded by the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and Tonga Communications Corporation (CBT) and Tonga were connected via a broadband Internet service on August 21, 2013.

Later, the Tongan Government and Digicel Tonga Ltd entered into an equity purchase agreement that was finalized when the Tongan Government and Digicel signed an agreement to purchase shares. SPA July 26, 2017.

Under the SPA Digicel purchased 16.6% of the Tongan Government's shares in Tonga Cable Ltd for USD$ 4.19 million, which helped finance the expansion of the fiber optic cable network at Vava'u and Ha'apai.
