Perhaps with the help of developers and perhaps the threat of federal intervention, Apple announced Thursday that it would "relax" restrictions that previously prohibited developers from using tools third party for iPhone, iPad or iPod touch applications.
The announcement comes on the heels of a report FTC is reviewing Apple's decision to ban developers from using tools that potentially allow Adobe Flash in iOS apps.
"Today we are making significant changes to our iOS Developer Program License in sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2 and 3.3.9 to ease some of the restrictions we put in place earlier." this year, "announced Cupertino, California. The sections are about an Apple language that banned "an intermediate translation or compatibility layer" allowing Flash. Adobe Creative Suite 5 provided a tool for developers to bring Flash applications to the iPhone.
"We release all restrictions on development tools used to create iOS applications, provided that the resulting applications do not download any code. This should give developers the flexibility they want, while maintaining the security we need, "adds Apple.
In August, the European Commission reportedly joined the FTC to determine whether the ban was hurting competition. Apple makes no mention of official inquiries, only announcing that today's changes came after listening to the developers.
In addition, after much anger over the Apple App Store's unannounced approval process, Apple released its App Store Review Guidelines. "We hope this makes us more transparent," Apple said.
