Steve Jobs has not hesitated to remain skeptical about multitouch screens on Mac desktops and laptops, noting that multitouch works best when a screen is horizontal: anything else does than give the arm to the gorilla.
For the moment, this means that Mac's multitouch options are limited to such accessories as Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad, but given the success of the iPad, it's only natural that Apple is looking for a more directly interactive approach horizontal multitouch, in which the display can convert Flush with a lap or a desk when it is in touch mode.
Now, a host of new patents have been awarded to Apple, the most interesting being a MacBook-to-iPad convertible, spotted by Patently Apple.
This concept is not too futuristic: Dell's new hybrid tablet / laptop, the Inspiron Duo, does multitouch in the same way. Imagine, however, a future MacBook Air that can switch between iOS and OS X just by the orientation of the screen … that's where iOS integration with laptops goes.
