The high-resolution illustrations found in the latest version of Mac OS X Lion have generated rumors that Apple might consider bringing a Retina display on Mac. Lion's Preview 2, released in late March, features icons with a maximum size of 1024 × 1024 and a 3200 × 3200 desktop background.

The new Lion wallpaper was discovered in early April by OSXDaily, and is distinguished by its ultra-high resolution that no Apple screen has ever supported. The new icons – which double the current size of Mac OS X 512 × 512 icons – were discovered over the weekend by MacMagazine.com.br.

Considering that there is currently no need for icons or screens of this size, these findings would suggest that Apple is working on improving the display on Macs . MacRumeurs note that Apple has built-in support for HiDPI display modes in Lion:

Based on iOS, Apple would have integrated support for what he calls "HiDPI display modes." These HiDPI modes allow developers to provide magnified images twice to support dual-resolution displays. Just like the Retina display on the iPhone 4, this means that the UI elements will remain the same size, but all will have a resolution twice as large and twice as detailed.

While a Mac with Retina screen would be nice, I would first prefer one on my iPad.
