The bodies of three people were found in search of four skiers, including two British, missing after an avalanche in the Italian ski resort of Courmayeur.

The three bodies were found Monday morning at Val Veny, south of Cormayeur, in the Valle d'Aosta region, bordering France.

Rescuers are still looking for the fourth person and still have to confirm the nationality of the victims.

The two British and two French skiers have disappeared since Sunday noon. They would have crossed by chance in the area affected by the avalanche.

The alarm was triggered by the friends of the two Britons, who apparently would be on the last day of their ski trip, after their absence from the meeting place. The four skiers were "off piste", according to Italian information. Rescue operations were made more difficult Sunday, due to the magnitude of the avalanche, preventing rescuers from conducting foot search and the risk of another.

In total, eight people were killed by avalanches in Italy over the weekend. Earlier Sunday, two bodies were found in Aosta, another skier died in the Lombardy region and an 18-year-old man was killed in South Tyrol.

The regional authority in Aosta, where the risk of avalanche is currently very high (level 3 out of 5), warned people living in the mountains to heed the weather warnings.

"The conditions are very different depending on the area; the most critical are in the north and northwest of the region, "said the authority in a statement.

In January, seven people were killed after a collision between a pbadenger plane and a helicopter over the Rutor Glacier in Aosta. The victims came from Italy, Germany, France and Belgium.

On Saturday, motorists were stranded for hours on a motorway leading into Austria after heavy snow caused a 12 km traffic jam.
