NEW DELHI: Faced with a sudden upsurge in swine flu cases, the government has asked chemists to ensure the availability of oseltamavir, the drug used in the treatment of seasonal H1N1 flu.

The number of deaths in the country this year because of swine flu has risen to 226, with the H1N1 virus making 31 more deaths in a week until Monday.

According to data from the Ministry of Health of the Union, Delhi, which until January 28, was the third largest number of cases of swine flu after Rajasthan and Gujarat.

The Ministry of Health has asked states to strengthen their surveillance for early detection of disease and to reserve beds in hospitals. The official said states had not yet made any requests for drugs, diagnostic kits and ways to address the problem.
