VILONIA, Arkansas – A pertussis alert in Vilonia has letters in the mail addressed to parents to warn them.

A message from the Arkansas Department of Health has recently been sent to the parents of children of the Vilonia Intermediate School.

The letter says that a school student has recently been exposed to whooping cough. It is a disease that can spread quickly.

Alerting is a standard procedure for infectious diseases.

"When we are aware that a person is exposed to whooping cough in a school, we inform people and let them know that if they have an illness, they must get treatment quickly," said the Dr. Dirk Haselow.

Since Monday, this student has not been diagnosed with whooping cough, but continues to monitor him after exposure.
