The show is not following the movie that they had planned

What are we doing in the shadow? The premiere took place at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014 and the film was eventually released by The Orchard in the United States, where it grossed over three million dollars. Waititi and Clement wanted to do a sequel to the movie, but they both got busy.

"We had always planned to make another movie, but other things have bothered us," said Waititi. "Thor: Ragnarok who was this gigantic movie. This prevented our plans to make a movie about werewolves that was in the same universe as the vampire movie. We continue to talk about it.

Instead, the FX TV series is set in New York City with a new group of vampires living together. This means that Waititi and Clement will not resume their roles at the movies.

"I was not good enough," Clement joked. "I've done it in the past too by writing a show in which I am[[[[Flight of conchords]and it's very difficult to do both. At the time, we thought Taika would not be able to participate because it was Thor movie. So it makes no sense not to have it with us and the rest of the population. Waititi and Clement spent 14 months editing the footage, and some of those deleted moments may end up in an episode.

They have a healthy VFX budget

FX gave What we do in the shade budget than their independent film, even though Waititi was quick to point out that it was not as big as Thor: Ragnarok. Some of the visual effects include bat transformations and wire removal for floating vampires, but do not expect to see too many major VFX plans.

"Since this is a documentary crew, you will never get the really cool picture of what's going on anyway," Clement said. "Someone has to run and get it.
