Contrary to popular belief that non-resident Ghanaians have a stronger appetite for mortgages, statistics from Ghana's largest mortgage bank, GHL Bank, reveal that most mortgage borrowers are residents of Ghana .
This reflects the growing interest and demand for mortgages of young professionals seeking to become homeowners and proves that mortgages are not the exclusive preserve of Ghanaians living offshore.
Richmond Asante, Head of Mortgage Creation, announced this idea at the long-awaited annual developer seminar, where he also said that most of these clients are typically 30- to 40-year-old men from the financial sectors, computer and mining. Although young people are very interested in mortgages, only 2% of mortgage borrowers are under 30 years of age.
Among the highlights of the seminar, there was a speech by Dr. Kwadwo Ohene Sarfoh, an international specialist in urban development, explains how industry players can innovate to ensure sustained growth in their business and reward developers who have contributed the most to the bank's mortgage business.
Sarfoh urged real estate companies to stop using the "as usual" approach to housing and adopt a "builder and realist" mindset even though the country is facing a housing deficit . He lamented the industry's trend that houses are built but do not meet the needs of the population or weaken their purchasing power. He emphasized the urgent need for real estate developers to gather market information to understand potential customers and know how to meet their needs.
Members of the Real Estate Club of the Bank of the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, Ghana Institute of Journalism , Ashesi University and the University of Professional Studies, have also shared innovative ideas on how technology could improve the housing sector. .
GREDA Executive Secretary Samuel Amegayibor urged developers to continue to implement policies that would protect and promote the growth of the sector.
