Scientists at the University of Salford said they have identified a cancer cell from which any cancer growth begins in the body.
The "cell of origin" supposed to trigger all types of cancer and allow the disease to spread has been discovered, say the scientists.
Researchers at Salford University described their discovery as an attempt to find the proverbial "needle in a haystack". But the results, which aimed to rewrite medical textbooks on cancer growth, could be a blow to existing treatments, such as chemotherapy.
Professor Michael Lisanti, author of the study, said, "We may need to press the reset button to find out how we treat cancer with drugs."
He added: "Scientists are talking about cancer caused by the regeneration of dying cells, called zombie cells.
"In other words, this original cell comes off and breaks loose, multiplying the malignant cells and creating a tumor."
He warned that a chemotherapy could encourage stem cells to proliferate further, which could promote tumor growth.
Two samples of human bad tumors were examined in the study, published in Frontiers in Oncology.
Scientists used fluorescent markers to isolate the most energetic cells taken from laboratory samples.
A tiny proportion of the cells – now known as energy cancer stem cells (eCSCs) – had a lot more energy than others.
At the present time, it is not known how dishonest cells are able to get out of senescence – an age-related process that causes freezing and multiplication of cells at the end of life – new tests are needed to prove any theory . (QNA)
