The Saudi Geostationary Satellite 1 (SGS-1), manufactured and developed with the contribution of Saudi scientists and engineers, was launched Tuesday by Arianespace, a native of French Guiana in South America, from trend reports making reference to Al Arabiya.

The satellite will be operated and controlled by ground stations in Saudi Arabia. It provides several services, including broadband communications, secure communications, and communications to semi-remote areas and disaster areas.

The Kingdom seeks to contribute to the development of national human resources by creating jobs in the satellite industry.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman oversaw satellite development during his visit to the United States in April 2018.

During his visit to Lockheed Martin in San Francisco, he was briefed by participants on state-of-the-art technologies in aviation and air defense, missile technology and satellite communications, as well as the high-tech air defense system THAAD (High Altitude Terminal), which the Kingdom is negotiating to buy and locate.

At the end of his visit, the crown prince signed the last piece to be placed on the Saudi satellite before its launch with the words "Above the clouds".
