Vodafone Ghana unveiled Facebook's "ExpressWifi" service, which provides the public with particularly underserved digital revolution zones, an opportunity to access fast Internet connectivity at affordable rates.

Express Wi-fi is a program that allows retail entrepreneurs to offer fast and affordable Wi-Fi services in hot spots in different communities. It is deployed in several countries, including India, Kenya, Indonesia, Nigeria and Tanzania.

The service was inaugurated in Jamestown, a suburb of Accra, to give community members the opportunity to experience and benefit from it.

The service offers 100 megabytes of data for GHC1.00 and one gigabyte of data over a seven-day period for GHC5.00. It is open to users from all other networks, without necessarily switching to the Vodafone network.

Ms. Yolanda Cuba, Executive Director of Vodafone Ghana, said it was necessary for everyone, regardless of its origin, to connect to the industrial and digital revolution, especially in today's world where technology dominates.

According to the National Communication Authority, despite a data penetration rate of 80.3%, a large portion of Ghanaians in the poor still can not afford easy access to data due to price.

She said the partnership between the two leading technology companies was aimed at transforming a sector that was already making concerted efforts to establish data dominance in the sub-region, adding that Vodafone had already deployed hot spots in Accra to the initiative in areas including Nima, Maamobi, Pigfarm, Jamestown and Abossey Okai.

"Affordability remains a problem for users in underserved areas of the country, despite their high demand for data, and this initiative is the answer," she said.

Cuba explained how to access the service: "You simply activate Wi-Fi on your phone, no matter what network you are on. You dial your cell phone number, you get a code and you're on Express Wi-Fi. It's as simple as that. "

Ms. Cuba said, "We are here to offer you an express Internet connection at a cheap and free cost to allow you to connect to your loved ones. We are committed to saying that we want everyone in Ghana to be connected to the digital world. "

Vincent Sowah Odotei, Deputy Minister of Communications, congratulated Vodafone Ghana on this initiative, saying the Express Wifi product, considering its structure, technology and price, was a good product that low income.

"We can not bring fiber here. This Express Wifi launched product is very affordable, will create sellers and businesses and is a step in the right direction, "he said.

Odotei urged private sector organizations to support the government's dream of digitizing Ghana and asked them to emulate Vodafone's approach.

"When the private sector starts creating something very competitive, it shows the confidence it has in the economy, and Vodafone has demonstrated it.

"This should tell you that, thanks to the macroeconomic stability we are developing, the private sector is starting to give the signal. The best support that any government can bring to the private sector is to bring stability, printability and stability to the exchange rate, "he added.
