Revealed for the first time in January at CES, the L5 Remote is a useful little dongle that complements the incredible remote control capabilities of the iPhone or iPod Touch by turning your iDevice into fully functional infrared remote controls.
All you do is snap the infrared sensor on your iPhone and charge the free remote application L5. The app comes with presets for many popular devices, but failing that, it's easy to program your iPhone with your existing remote control by placing them face to face and pressing the button on your existing remote that you want to program.
From a conceptual point of view, I like the idea of using my iPhone as a truly universal remote, but if you think that losing a remote control is a trivial and irritating event, imagine losing a little dongle between the cushions of the sofa. Worse still, the L5 remote costs £ 50: far too expensive when a cheap universal remote can be purchased at Best Buy at half price.
Until the iPhones and iPod Touch come with an integrated infrared receiver, I do not really see the iPhone to rule out existing universal remotes from the market.
