While Microsoft Internet Explorer accounted for just under 60% of the browser market, Chrome has been outstripped by Google, compared to Apple's Safari, says a new poll released Tuesday. Although Mozilla has absorbed the largest percentage of the market lost by Microsoft, Google Chrome took 6.7%, against 2.5% for Apple Safari.
Internet Explorer dropped to 59.95% of the browser market, down from its peak of 80% in 2008, according to Net Applications, which badyzes Internet traffic trends. Firefox has recovered about nine of those lost percentage points, Google Chrome capturing 6.7% of its share in IE (compared to 0 before 2009) and Safari 2.5 percentage points, representing 4.72% of the browser market.
Another company, StatCounter, lists Chrome with 5.35% of the browser market and Safari with 3.63%.
At the end of 2009, Google Chrome was ahead of Safari, placing the Apple browser in fourth place. Even before Chrome rolled out of the beta, critics said Google's browser was 34 percent faster than the Apple alternative.
