The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Ghana and the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) joined them in congratulating Dagbon on the restoration of the peace.

For 16 years, tensions between the Andanis and the Abudus in Dagbon were mild after the March 27, 2002 clashes that led to the killing of the late Ya-Na Yakubu Andani and some of his elders.
The clashes were triggered in part by a disagreement over the identity of the legitimate heir to the throne.
The NPP government of the time, under former President John Kufuor, formed the Wuako Commission, chaired by Asantehene, Otumfuor Osei Tutu, to investigate the circumstances that led to the clashes and to the victims.
On 18 January, Dagbon Kingmakers chose Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama to become the new leader of the Dagbon population after the Commission issued a road map for the Dagbon peace process in November 2018.

UNDP and UNOWAS have stated that "the restoration of peace in Dagbon helps to remove a formidable obstacle to social cohesion and local stability and offers a unique opportunity to exploit the Kingdom's full potential for the benefit of the people of Dagbon and Ghana ".
They urged stakeholders to continue dialogue and consensus building to consolidate and maintain peace in Dagbon.
