To this day, most film and television fans know Mindy Kaling. If you do not know her for the recurring role of Kelly Kapoor in Office (2005-13), you've probably caught her in movies or in her own movie The Mindy project.
In both TV shows, Kaling was a major force behind the scenes. She has recorded over 200 producer credits and written 47 episodes of the projects. If you are a fan of Kaling and you have to bet, you probably bet it was only a matter of time before she devoted all those talents to a feature film.
At the Sundance 2019 festival, Kaling presented his first film (titled Late at night) for the public to see. After Amazon has bought its distribution rights for the United States, moviegoers can rest badured that they will be able to see the film in movie theaters at the end of this year.
The first feature film written and produced by Kaling, co-starring
Sure Late at nightKaling only has the credit of screenwriter. This film is a product of his creation. (She shares the producer credit with three others.) Fans of Kaling's presence on screen will not be disappointed either.
She co-starred in the film as Molly Patel, who becomes a "rookie for diversity" within the all-male writing team of talk show host Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson) While Newbury struggles to keep her audience (and her work), she adds Patel to her team to improve her image.
But Kaling's character refuses to sit in the back of the writer's room. She takes the lead in Newbury's struggle to reorganize her declining career prospects. The interaction between the two takes precedence in the film directed by Nisha Ganatra, producer and director on Transparent.
Looking at Kaling's time at Office, it is safe to say that she brought to the scenario a concrete experience. Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Greg Daniels are the only three authors to benefit from this project. (Caroline Williams, active in the first years of the show, ahead of Kaling a few credits.)
Kaling also adapted "Four weddings and a funeral" on television
Fans of the movie Hugh Grant-Andie MacDowell Four weddings and a funeral (1994) should also keep Kaling on their radar next year. She adapted the rom-com clbadic to television and has already started shooting the series in London.
MacDowell will appear in 12 episodes, but his cast will be very different, although the scriptwriter of the 1994 film (Richard Curtis) is an executive producer. Kaling has the only writing credits listed and will serve as executive producer of the series, which could be screened on Hulu as early as 2019.
Previously, fans of Kaling, Thompson, John Lithgow, Reid Scott (Veep), and Amy Ryan can see Late at night in theaters. It should arrive in the summer before heading to Amazon Prime for streaming.
