Actor and comedian Steven Levy, aka Steve Bean, died Jan. 21 after a battle with cancer. He was 58 years old.
Born in Lynn, Mbad., And raised in Providence, Northern Ireland, Levy studied at Carnegie Mellon University and graduated from the theater. In 1980, Levy joined the comic Chris Zito, a duo that became known as Zito and Bean. In Boston, Zito and Bean attracted an enthusiastic crowd. They became the mainstays of the comedy scene in Boston and enjoyed a three-year series with their own show in a popular club, Play It Again Sam's. After about a decade, Levy separates from the duo to move to Los Angeles, where he joins the groundlings improv group and writes for shows such as "Tim Conway Show" and "Dot Comedy." series "Quantum Leap", "Murder She Wrote", "Married with Children" and "Monk", and the comedy "Shakes the Clown" by Bobcat Goldthwait. "
In late 2016, Bean was diagnosed with sino-squamous cell carcinoma (nasal cancer), one of the rarest forms of cancer. Levy recounted his subsequent treatment in the "My Year Without a Nose" essay for Mel Magazine.
Levy is survived by his wife, Caroline Carrigan; his son, Jacob Randall Levy; the parents, Irwin and Dorothy Levy; sisters Lauren Levy Brodie and her husband Todd and Jill Levy Sorota; nieces and nephews, Michael Miller, Allison Miller, Lindsey Sorota and Andrew Sorota; and the little niece, Amelia Wilcox.
