A pig farm was held 24 hours a day at two farms in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, following outbreaks of swine fever.
The disease, highly contagious and generally deadly for pigs, was detected on Wednesday at Toyota City and Tahara City farms. Both farms have the same operator.
Outbreaks of the disease were also confirmed at four Gifu (Nagano) facilities and two other prefectures to which pigs were shipped from the Toyota City farm.
Officials from Aichi Prefecture said that of the 8,200 pigs on both farms, about 5,400 were slaughtered on Thursday morning.
They say that it will probably take until Saturday to slaughter all the pigs. All disease control operation, including the burial of pigs and disinfection facilities, will last until about Tuesday next week.
A pig slaughter is also underway on a farm in Nagano Prefecture, central Japan, where the disease was detected Wednesday in pigs shipped from Aichi.
Heads of the prefecture said they wanted to eliminate more than 2,400 pigs on the farm and take other measures to contain the outbreak by Saturday morning.
Swine fever is not harmful to humans even though it eats meat from infected animals.
