Renders appeared from a relatively new compact smartphone from Sony. The phone would have a 21: 9 screen with no edge down, but with a big edge at the top.
Virtually all smartphones in recent years have the same edge at the top and bottom or the bottom edge is thicker. The article in WinFuture, which puts renderings online, does not say why Sony has chosen it. Presumably, thinning the bottom edge should make the top of the screen more accessible when it is used with one hand.
The screen would have a diagonal of 5.9 "and a resolution of 2560×1080 pixels, which would take the screen format to 21: 9, the same aspect ratio as the movies, and many Smartphones have image formats between 18: 9 and 19.5: 9. The XZ4 format would also have a 21: 9 screen, which Sony would like to call CinemaScope.
The phone on the rendering has a screen that is about the same width as that of Sony's compact smartphones in recent years, namely about 5.8 cm. They had screens with diagonals of 4.6 "and 5". Because of the length and the top edge, this phone is probably longer than the Compact models: it comes out about 152x66mm, where the XZ2 Compact is 135x66mm.
The specifications of the new device, that WinFuture designates by XA3, are not high-end: they would have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660-soc, with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. This soc is specially designed for mid-range smartphones. The case would be plastic. The device has a USB port, a 3.5mm jack and a fingerprint scanner on the side. Sony could present the phone in just over two weeks at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Sony will hold a presentation on Monday, February 25th.
