Jesse Lingard revealed how a friendly rivalry with teammate Marcus Rashford helped inspire Manchester United's Premier League formation.

Lingard says some of the improvements are due to direct competition between the two friends.

"Marcus and I set goals, to challenge ourselves," he said.

"It's obviously different goals, maybe in some games, the number of hits or as many contacts in a game is important.

"It's just different random things, just to make you think and push yourself somehow because you want your friend to succeed too."

Lingard also praised the impact of Solskjaer – and his number two, Mike Phelan – and explained how their frank approach put spring back in the footsteps of players.
