Spotify now explicitly forbids ad blockers, as stated in the updated Terms of Service Policy sent today. The new rules specifically state that "bypbading or blocking advertisements in the Spotify service, or creating or distributing tools designed to block advertisements in the Spotify service" may result in the immediate termination or suspension of your account.
The service is already taking important steps to limit ad blockers. In one DigiDay Last August's report, a Spotify spokesperson revealed that the company had "several detection measures in place to monitor the consumption of the service in order to detect, investigate and deal with [artificial manipulation of streaming activity]. "
After learning last March that 2 million users (about 2% of free Spotify users) were avoiding ads with apps and accounts altered, Spotify began cracking down by disabling accounts when the company detected abnormal activity. Users received e-mail warnings and had the option to reactivate their accounts after uninstalling the ad blocker software. In some rare cases where the problem persisted, Spotify would end the account.
The new terms of use, which will come into effect on March 1, will give Spotify the power to terminate accounts immediately, without notice.
The new guidelines will open an exciting growth period for Spotify, a service committed to creating a podcast network with recent acquisitions by podcast companies Gimlet Media and Anchor. The latest Spotify earnings report showed that the company was making profits for the first time in 13 years.
