SILVER SPRING, M.D. (ABC NEWS) – The Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning about a rare and deadly cancer linked to bad implants.
The FDA has sent letters to health care providers, including plastic surgeons, doctors and oncologists, to help diagnose the disease at an early stage.
According to the FDA, since 2011, at least 457 women in the United States have been diagnosed with anaplastic large cell lymphoma. Nine of them are dead.
"About 11 million women worldwide have bad implants, 300,000 implants are performed each year in the United States," said Dr. Jennifer Ashton, Chief Medical Correspondent at ABC News. "The FDA wants not only doctors and health care providers to be aware of these symptoms, but also women with implants, who tend to show up about three years after implant placement."
According to the FDA, implants with textured surfaces are more closely related to cancer than those with smooth surfaces.
Women planning surgery should discuss the risks and benefits of different types of implant with their doctor. Those who already have implants should look for the symptoms.
They understand:
- Pain
- Redness or swelling on one side
- Asymmetry – one side is different from the other

The FDA claims that it is not a bad cancer but a rare cancer badociated with bad implants.
