Schalke in trouble turns to Welsh teenager Matondo

Having finished second in the Bundesliga last season with Domenico Tedesco, his 33-year-old coach, Schalke has lost ten of his 20 league games.

The 2-0 defeat at home last weekend against Borussia Moenchengladbach allowed Schalke to finish 12th overall, his best ranking since the start of the season as Matondo made his debut.

He is expected to play again this Saturday at Bayern's Allianz Arena with Man City to play in the Champions League final home game on Feb. 20.

"He is 18, we know it, but we have been watching him for so long and he has everything he needs to play in the Bundesliga," said Schalke manager Christian Heidel.

Schalke has no win in 17 games against Bayern, who had been beaten for the last time in the 2011 German Cup semi-finals when Bayern's current captain, Manuel Neuer, was still at Schalke .

Bayern, third, will desperately try to repair the shock of a 3-1 defeat in the league on Saturday against Bayer Leverkusen, who ruthlessly attacked the counter and found huge holes to exploit.

Bayern bounced back with a 3-2 win at Hertha Berlin on Wednesday in Germany 's Cup, but was once again fragile at the back with Mats Hummels making a bad mistake for the second goal of Hertha before the winner of Kingsley Coman.

Schalke won the 4-1 World Cup at home against Fortuna Dusseldorf. Matondo gave a glimpse of his talent by playing only in the first half.

After many injuries, Schalke hopes that the signing of the young Welsh will save his season.

Sancho de Schalke

The teenager born in Cardiff cost nine million euros and arrived after breaking a club record in Manchester, posting 2.62 seconds on more than 20 meters in the sprint, the fastest of all time in City.

Schalke sees Matondo as his answer to Jadon Sancho, the 18-year-old English winger who helped Dortmund's fierce rival to score seven points in the league with consistently outstanding performances.

Tedesco sees it as an investment "in the medium and long term", able to "win every head-to-one".

While Leroy Sane has been successful in going the opposite direction from Schalke to Man City, Matondo is part of the trend of teenagers from the best British clubs heading to the Bundesliga in search of play time.

"Schalke is the right decision for my future as a footballer – guys like Mesut Ozil, Ivan Rakitic and Leroy Sane have made tremendous progress in their careers here," said Matondo, joining Schalke.

Tedesco has had a ruthless series since coming to Schalke in 2017, having been club captain and 2014 World Cup winner Benedikt Hoewedes, who was loaned to Juventus before joining Lokomotiv Moscow.

The current and favorite skipper of the fans, Ralf Faehrmann, another product of the Schalke academy, was also sent off last month, replaced by under-21 German goalkeeper Alexander Nuebel.

After Nuebel's departure last Saturday, Faehrmann was reinstated in the Cup mid-week Cup match, but it remains to be seen who Tedesco will prefer a goal against Bayern.
