Minister of Roads and Transport, Kwasi Amoako-Atta
The Minister of Roads and Transport, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, asked road toll officials to insist that state ministers pay tolls.
"I heard people coming to the booths and they said that I was general manager or something else, so they pbaded. All collectors of toll booths in this country have been informed that every individual in Ghana, no matter who you are, you have to pay tolls if you are a minister that you have to pay, if you are a general manager, you have to pay . "
"I am the Minister of Roads now by the grace of God and everywhere I go, you can ask my driver to pay my toll," he told the media on Thursday.
According to Mr. Amoako-Atta, with the exception of a few selected people in the country, all citizens are required by law to pay road tolls, including ministers.
He said he had received reports that officials would be hiding behind their titles to avoid paying toll booths.
Last year, the minister said that the country's 35 toll stations will soon be automated.
"It is important that we reinforce our expertise in road tolling, as road tolls are the second largest contributor to the road fund. The largest contributor to this fund is the fuel tax. "
"If you take all the toll stations in the country right now, we have 35 of them all over the country, of which only about four are automated cabins."
"What I am going to do to improve the perception of tolls, is to improve the automation of as many people as possible. I will ensure that those that can be automated are automated to improve toll collection, "said the Minister.
