Zac Efron at the hospital after tore his ACL while he was shredding the gnar

You know what they say: Sometimes you shred the gnar and sometimes the gnar tears you apart.

A photo published on Friday on Zac Efron's Instagram account showed the actor rising from a hospital bed – a part of his left leg bandaged and in a splint. In the caption, he explains that he opted for surgery after tore his ACL "shredding the gnar" -aka, surfing.

"I tore my ACL shredding the gnar but everything is fine," wrote Efron. "I opted for surgery so I could come back stronger than ever Thanks to Dr. Kvitne and his team at the Kerlan-Jobe Surgery Center I will keep you informed of the progress made during my healing and my progress Thank you for all the love and positivity! "

So wait, what did Efron tore up exactly?

The ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament, is located inside the knee and helps to connect the femur bone to the tibia. (For the causes and treatments of ACL tears, as well as what you can do to prevent this from happening, see our guide to joint health.)

ACL tears are common in young athletes like Efron. When he's not surfing, the 31-year-old actor trains at the kettlebell, sits on benches, climbs, and rides his bike like fellow Greatest Showman, Hugh Jackman. Sometimes he gets stunts too, because, why not?

Efron seems to be optimistic about his recovery. We guess that he will have to carefully film Baywatch 2, which is apparently under construction.
