ASince the measles outbreak in Washington, the number of cases has risen to 51, while other states are starting to get a sense of the critical situation in Washington. This week, measles cases were reported in nine other states in the country.
On Friday, the CDC confirmed that 10 states had confirmed measles cases: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Texas, and Washington.
In the vast majority of these states, the disease has spread among people who have not been vaccinated at all or who have not had it. both as was the case for four of the cases identified in Texas earlier this week. The measles vaccine is 97% effective in people who receive both doses.
Measles activity was monitored more closely in Washington State, where a public health emergency was declared earlier in January. Clark County, Washington, reports 50 cases, and King County has reported one. In the neighboring county of Multnomah, Oregon – where Portland is a hot spot for anti-vaccination – four measles cases have been reported.
According to the CDC tracking page, New York City and New York State both report measles outbreaks, although the origin of these outbreaks dates back to early October. The measles count in Rockland County, New York, has reached 130 since October 2018 (a figure higher than that of the CDC for 2019, in part because Rockland County has 2018 cases in the of this hatching). In addition, New York City reported 67 cases of measles between November 2018 and February 2019 in Brooklyn.
Fortunately, outside New York and Washington State, the number of measles cases is significantly lower. Texas has confirmed six cases of measles outside of Houston and one in Bell County, just north of Austin. Connecticut reported two, and the other states on the CDC list all reported one to three cases.
It is important to note that the fact that a state reports a case of measles does not mean that it is experiencing an outbreak, although the CDC monitors cases closely because of its highly contagious nature. Nevertheless, there are still a few cases of measles each year in the United States: in 2018, the CDC reported 372 cases.
It's hard to say if this will be a record year for measles cases across the country in terms of volume. At the present time, the total number of cases is 79 for the CDC (counting only since January – outbreaks in Rockland County and New York City have one foot in 2018). But speaking at Houston ChroniclePeter Hotez, Ph.D., Dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, suggested that 2019 could be unique.
"2019 may well be the year when we will really see the consequences of anti-vaxxers on public health," Hotez said. "In a sense, we've already seen that in 2018, but it looks like there may be more cases in 2019."
It does not matter that 2019 is the year of the account for those who have neglected the MMR vaccine, it is already tragic enough for the inhabitants of these ten states who had to fight against the disease.
