France warns Italy against "not getting involved in our internal affairs" after recalling Rome's ambassador to Rome

[ad_1]

France took the unusual decision of recalling its ambbadador to Italy, saying it was a warning to his ally that he did not interfere. in his internal affairs.

A spokesman for the French government said the decision was made after months of unfounded attacks by the populist Italian government against migration and economic policies.

France is currently plagued by demonstrations of yellow vests – and the move has been supported and endorsed by Italian government politicians.

Luigi Di Maio, the leader of the Italian government movement Five Star, recently met with protesters in a Parisian suburb who are seeking to run as MEPs in the next European elections – against the ruling party of Emmanuel Macron.

French government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux told Europe-1 radio on Friday that the rash meeting violated "the most basic diplomacy".

He said the withdrawal of the French ambbadador to Italy was temporary but called on the Italian government to "behave better towards its partners".

Earlier this month, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini of the far-right Northern League party said he hoped French voters would overthrow Emmanuel Macron from the government. .

Mr Salvini and his coalition partners took a stand against Macron's centrist liberalism – particularly on the issue of migration.

The French government is facing a fight in the next European elections in the face of national discontent and Macron's approval ratings. He is criticized by both right and left for his accusations of "president of the rich".

The anti-immigration party of Mr Salvini is about to make significant progress in the elections to the European Parliament. The Northern League and other far-right groups have spoken of the creation of an anti-immigration "axis" within the EU in order to modify the policies of the block – provocative borrowing of a terminology badociated with the Third Reich.
