Maurizio Sarri expressed hope, rather than belief, that Chelsea will be at his best in Manchester City on Sunday.
The last two performances of Chelsea have been scored nine times.
A 4-0 defeat at Bournemouth – Chelsea's worst Premier League performance since September 1996 – was followed by a 5-0 win over the Huddersfield club bottom.
Chelsea's training and tactics under Sarri were predictable – a 4-3-3 formation, focused on ball possession – but the results and performances were anything but nil.
"In the last game, we really reacted very well," said Sarri.
"After the game against Huddersfield, I was really happy with the result, especially the performance.
"Now we know very well that we need coherence. I hope our Sunday version will be the best. "
Chelsea are undefeated in seven games against defending champions, having ended their 21 games without defeat in the league on December 8th.
Sarri seems to have followed the advice of city boss Pep Guardiola to focus on 14 players in his first season in English football.
Guardiola had a difficult first season in 2016-17, when Antonio Conte's Chelsea won the title and his team finished third.
Sarri said City's patient approach had been rewarded, with the remarkable success of the City title last season based on Guardiola's recruitment and approach.
The 60-year-old Italian may not have the pedigree of the former boss of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, but he hopes to have the same time in Chelsea, and not in a club known for his patience.
Sarri said, "You are more competitive in the market where you have to work. I do not know otherwise.
"I think we only have to work and we have to try to reduce the gap because there is a gap right now.
"Here, it's really very difficult. The Premier League is very competitive. It's not easy to win, it's not easy to enter the Champions League.
"We have to work, but I think that they (City) are an example for each club."
