President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on Ghanaians living abroad to support the construction of a national cathedral in the country.
Speaking at a fundraiser for the Washington DC National Cathedral, the president said that the construction of the cathedral would be an act of thanksgiving to God "for his blessings, his favor, grace and mercy on our nation ".
He added that the construction of the cathedral would promote the unity of Christians that will spread to the whole country, because the majority of Ghanaians are Christians.
"71% of Ghana's population adheres to the Christian religion, grouped under the various beliefs of the Christian faith. The national interdenominational cathedral will help to unify the Christian community and thus promote national unity and social cohesion, "he said.
Calling for their support, President Akufo-Addo informed participants that the National Cathedral, once built, will help promote tourism.
"It will be an emblematic infrastructure for national, regional and international pilgrimages and tourism. This is why we are trying to mobilize the Christian community, at home and abroad, to join us in gathering the resources needed to build the cathedral. "
"I need your help to do it. The cathedral will not be just another national monument adorning Accra's star line, it will be the ideal starting point for the Christian community to come together to pray and promote national conversations about the role of the community. faith in the construction of Ghana "he added.
The president also reiterated that the construction of the cathedral was a fulfillment of the promise he had made to God before winning the 2016 general election.
