ARSENAL was reportedly crippled by Mesut Ozil's astronomical salary, but Lionel Messi made him look poor.
Barcelona superstar is by far the highest paid player on the planet, winning £ 7.3m MONTH before tax – almost double his rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
Messi signed a new contract in November 2017 where he earns around £ 1.7 million a week – according to the latest annual salary report from The Team.
Meanwhile, the famous frenemy Ronaldo is paying 4.1 million pounds a month to Juventus, or 56% of what Messi earns in Spain.
Arsenal was left in an enigma in the transfer window last month, with no money to buy new players.
One reason is their devastating wage bill – overtaken by Ozil.
The gunners had hoped to sell the former Germany, but were unable to find potential buyers, with his huge pay package of £ 350,000 a week that could be a stumbling block.
But his monthly salary of 1.4 million pounds is completely exceeded by Messi – who wins FIVE times as much.
Antoine Griezmann, the Atletico Madrid ace, ranks third among the highest paid players in the world with a monthly salary of 2.9 million pounds.
The star of Paris Saint-Germain, Neymar, ranks fourth with £ 2.7m – with team-mate Kylian Mbappe (£ 1.5m) in ninth.
Luis Suarez occupies fifth place with 2.5 million pounds, ahead of 2.2 million pounds the winner Gareth Bale.
But the flop Barcelona Philippe Coutinho ranks seventh, at the rate of 2 million pounds per month, with fellow disconcerting star, Alexis Sanchez Manchester United.
Coutinho, a former Liverpool star, has been criticized by fans in Barcelona a year after being transferred to Camp Nou for £ 145m.
