Minister of Education, Mr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh
Education Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh has hinted that the government will soon hire universities to possibly reduce the time spent on pursuing an undergraduate program.
He added that the government was considering reducing the length of the current four-year period to three years.
According to him, in most countries of the world, it takes three years to complete an undergraduate program.
"Around the world, the first cycle lasts three years, not four years. Why should we spend four years in this field? We will meet with university professors and start challenging them because Ghana is not an island, "said the minister.
Speaking at the Danquah Institute's Leadership Conference in 2019 on the theme: "A World-Clbad Education and Imperative for the Next Generation of Leaders," Matthew Opoku Prempeh said that it's important to It was reported that the University of Ghana had initially set up three general studies programs whose exams are not corrected, while the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology also takes three years. .
"Because we learned [from] our story, they took two years to earn a degree at the University of Ghana. KNUST took three years, because at the University of Ghana, they pbaded a first university exam which was not awarded to them and they always got a doctorate, "said the minister.
At the present time, all public universities and most private universities apply a four-year first-year degree system to most programs, which, according to some, is not not in line with global standards.
Matthew Opoku Prempeh said the government is currently working to revise existing programs for different levels of education in the country to ensure that graduates can compete in the 21st century world of work.
He said the government is committed to improving technical and vocational education, as stated in the manifesto of his campaign.
