The last territory controlled by the fighters of the so-called Islamic State was in the small town of Baghouz Al-Fawqani, just west of a wall of land on the outskirts of the village where the Syrian democratic forces supported by the United States began their push.

The SDF knows that even victory here does not mean that the Islamic State is totally defeated.
"ISIS is not over yet," said a commander this week. "He is still in this zone, he is still fighting, he still has dormant cells in the areas we have liberated."
