Store-bought vitamin C tablets could be a breakthrough in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
Researchers at Deakin University have discovered that 500 milligrams of vitamin C a day can reduce high blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.
In a landmark trial that lasted for a decade, participants' blood sugar peaks decreased by 36% after meals.
And one of the principal investigators, badociate professor Glenn Wadley, told Ross and John that their studies had also revealed that vitamin intake had helped lower blood pressure.
"Half of those described as hypertensive before the study had returned to normal after the study," he said.
Professor Wadley was quick to point out that vitamin C was "not a cure" for diabetes.
"It's another tool in the toolbox to try to get those blood sugar levels in a healthy place."
And why tablets?
"You need a dozen oranges a day to reach the levels we're talking about," he said.
