Sudan says it will free journalists arrested during protests

Sudan has announced that it will release all the journalists it arrested for covering protests demanding the resignation of President Omar al-Bashir.

Official media said the journalists would be released on Saturday. Activists, speaking anonymously for fear of reprisal, say the initiative aims to defuse public anger over the government's response to protests. They say that at least 16 journalists are behind bars.

The protests were triggered by an economic crisis, but quickly escalated into calls for the overthrow of Al-Bashir, who took power during a military coup in 1989. The Doctors, who supports the protests, says that at least 57 people have been killed.

Activists and opposition figures have called on Parliament to hold an emergency session to condemn the use of force by the government.
