Dean Ambrose's decision to leave WWE left the fans stunned at the announcement.

Ambrose is one of the company's biggest stars, a former WWE champion and three-time intercontinental champion who led the riot as part of the Shield program, alongside Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns .

But the 33-year-old – his real name Jonathan Good – will step down when his contract expires after WrestleMania.

WWE made the somewhat unusual decision to confirm it late last month, two days after Royal Rumble.

Ambrose rejected a major pay raise during face-to-face interviews with WWE leader, Vince McMahon.

April leaves in April

To date, no official reason has explained his decision to leave.

The suggestion however was that Ambrose – who is married to Raw's commentator, Renee Young – had been frustrated by the evolution of her character over the past few months.

However, speaking on the podcast of Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins, The Major Wrestling Figure podcast, Ambrose's words on people who are only part of the WWE for money can give an indication – at a time when the independent scene thrives.

Dean Ambrose leaves the company

Ambrose said, "It's easy to forget that you love wrestling and why you started to love wrestling with it.

"It brought me back to my childhood.

"You are like me, there are many people here who are only there for money.

"They have not grown up watching this, they do not care what they do, they have no artistic care for what we do."

"But you are like me, it's all we liked, that's our thing."

Since his departure was announced, Ambrose was booked to Raw last week, where he was beaten by the EC3 newcomer.

It remains to be seen who will be the last match of Ambrose, probably at WrestleMania 35 – if he is on the map at MetLife Stadium.
