JAMMU, Feb. 9: Three people died of H1N1 flu, more commonly known as swine flu, in the Jammu Division, putting government health agents on guard.
"Nearly 33 patients have been screened for the disease in the last two months or so, four of which have been found positive to date," said a source at the Ministry of Health.
They said that until now, swine flu had killed three people in Jammu, including a five-year-old child. The first death was reported on January 31 at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Hospital Narayana Superspeciality of Kakrayal (Katra), adding that the deceased had been identified as Vinod Kumar (53), son of Omkar Nath , residing in Jagti (Nagrota). Giving details of the second death due to swine flu, sources said that a five-year-old child, namely Kaka, son of Ghansara Singh of Ramban, had become the second victim of this dreaded disease. He was also suffering from cancer and was under treatment at SMGS Hospital in Jammu. A third death was reported yesterday at GMC Jammu, where a woman, Tazeen Akhter, wife of Mohd Rashid, resident of Bafliaz (Surankote), died of the disease. She was undergoing treatment in the isolation ward of the hospital.
A death of a resident of Jammu has also been reported at the Dayanand Medical University in Ludhiana, according to informed sources. They stated that the deceased was identified as Anjum Mir of Khatikan Talab (Jammu), an active police officer of J & K. The fourth patient who was found positive for the H1N1 virus is a woman, namely Anja Jan , under treatment at SMGS hospital, according to another source.
