Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, of Southampton, remained "speechless" after his spectacular 2-1 loss to Cardiff.
Jack Stephens 'equalizer in the first minute of overtime seemed to earn one point, but Cardiff's substitute Kenneth Zohore struck two minutes later to inflict Saints' first Premier League defeat in 2019.
Victory took Cardiff over his opponents in the standings, leaving Ralph Hasenhuttl's team in the top three.
Sol Bamba gave Cardiff the lead and Hojbjerg told his club's website: "I am speechless. I do not know very well the words to use.
"The only thing that I can say that makes sense at the moment is that we, as a group, as a team and as a club, need to get together and be together. Analyze our small mistakes and our details.
"Then we will improve, do better, work harder and come back as a stronger camp.
"They (the coaches) prepared everything for us, we just had to put it into play. We did well and in some parts of the game we created what we had to do.
"We must give credit to Cardiff to continue to believe, because in this case, we must believe until the end.
"We are going to work on what we need to work on and come back stronger. That's what this club is, it's the players and the coaches.
"We have great potential, but we still have to put it in excellence. That's what we're going to work on.
Saturday's match was Cardiff's first since the confirmation that club record holder Emiliano Sala was killed in a plane crash.
The attacker's body was found in an underwater wreck in the Channel this week after the crash last month.
Bamba said on the Cardiff website: "I thought a lot after scoring. I knew that Emiliano was looking from up there, so it was so good to score the three points.
"The last two weeks have been tough and we knew we had to come here and get a result. It was not easy, especially with the events that took place recently.
"The result is a mbadive boost, especially at this stage of the season. We want to create a dynamic and go on a series of games. With the coming matches, we know we can get three points each game, especially at home. "
