BBC specialist Mick Gooding praised the impact of defenseman Matt Miazga since arriving in Reading during the transfer in January.
The US center-back helped the team maintain consecutive white sheets in the championship, the latest being the scoreless draw in Sheffield on Wednesday and Saturday.
Miazga, who has signed a loan to the Royals for the remainder of the season with Chelsea, has already become a key figure in the group as he fights to avoid the fall.
And Gooding said the pragmatic advocate was exactly what the team needed to change the results.
"It does not matter to look good, if you do the job, people will recognize it," he told Radio Berkshire.
"It's what Miazga has done since coming to Reading, he and Emi Martinez (goalkeeper) have had a really positive impact on the defensive structure.
"If the ball needs to be cleaned, it will do it.If the ball is there, it can touch and pbad it on to someone else, it will do it."
"He is putting himself in very good positions.
"He feels the danger and automatically puts himself in the best defensive positions so that the team is not open.
"He and Martinez have been a big plus for Reading, no question."
The reading point at Hillsborough this weekend allowed José Gomes to make three successive draws.
However, it was not enough for them to leave the relegation zone and they remain a vanishing point for security.
The games continue to thicken rapidly as the Royals host the Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night for the first of the remaining 15 games in the league.
Gooding added: "They did not really worry Sheffield on Wednesday in the future, but let 's settle the defense first.
"If you stop conceding goals, you're likely to get at least one point, if not all three, so they're going in the right direction, no doubt.
"They have to eliminate the positives, it's another blank sheet, they just have to start creating a little more at the other end.
"Hopefully they can do it against Blackburn on Wednesday night and that they should then score four points on two games."
