The governing body of European football, UEFA, confirmed that there would be a minute of silence at all UEFA Champions League and Europa League matches this week in memory from Emiliano Sala.

The 28-year-old striker, who joined Nantes in January in Cardiff City for £ 15 million, died after his plane crashed on January 21 in the English Channel.

Sala was leaving from Nantes for Cardiff when the single – propeller plane carrying pilot David Ibbotson, a Piper Malibu, crashed into the sea.

The body of the Argentine footballer was found on the seabed last week and was officially identified on February 7th.

The Ibbotson pilot's body is still missing.

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said on Tuesday: "On behalf of all members of UEFA, I would like to express my deepest condolences to Emiliano Sala's family and loved ones for their loss.

"I am deeply saddened by the fact that his life was so cruelly removed at such a young age and I urge supporters across the continent to pay tribute to his memory over the next few days."

Clubs participating in UEFA competition matches this week will also have the opportunity to wear a black armband in memory of Argentina.

An investigation in Dorset on Monday found that Sala had died from injuries to his head and chest.

Sala was identified by her fingerprints after the recovery of her body at sea by a team of specialists.

A full investigation by the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) into the crash of the aircraft is expected to take six to 12 months. However, an interim report must be submitted within 15 days, has it been confirmed.
