Dan Botwe is Minister of Regional Reorganization
An intense "battle" ensued for the establishment of regional capitals in newly created regions.
Six regions, namely the western North cut into the western region, Ahafo and Bono East, carved into the Brong Ahafo region, Oti in the Volta region, as well as the Northeast and the savannah dug into Northern Region would come Regional Minister of Reorganization and Development, Dan Kwaku Botwe, announced its existence.
After a successful referendum by many that has led to the creation of six more regions, President Akufo-Addo has to present constitutional instruments for the creation of all regions, starting today with the North-East regions and Savannah.
Lobbying and intense protests took place in some of the major cities in the regions after leaders and people claimed that they were being pushed out of the process to name capital cities.
After joining forces to rally their people and campaign mbadively for a vote of "yes" for the new regions, it is the respective chiefs and traditional leaders who lead the lobby that has been characterized by unrest.
Yesterday, for example, the chiefs and residents of Nkoranza, in the Bono-Est region, claimed that they had been mistreated in the designation of the regional capital.
Some residents of Sefwi Wiawso and Bibiani began claiming the capital of the new region in their respective cities after the end of the referendum.
Those in Bibiani claimed that the city was the center of the new region and would be accessible to all residents of the North West.
However, residents of Sefwi Wiawso Municipality insisted that the region was "prepared" for the regional capital and said the municipality already had the infrastructure to host the new capital of the region.
Residents of the Bono East and Ahafo regions have also "fought" for their cities to host regional capitals.
In Ahafo, the inhabitants of big cities like Goaso, in the northern municipality of Asunafo, Bechem, in the southern municipality of Tano, as well as Hwidiem, in the southern municipality of Asutifi, all want to host the regional capital.
For Bono East, Techiman in the municipality of Techiman, Kintampo in the municipality of Kintampo, Nkoranza, and Atebubu in the municipality of Atebubu Amantin are fighting over the regional capital.
There has been intense lobbying in the Oti region where big cities like Nkwanta, Jasikan, Kadjebi, Krachi and Dambai are all up to the regional capitals and the powerful leaders of the respective regions give nothing to the hazard.
Savannah
However, in the new region of Savannah, it is a direct struggle between Damongo and Salaga, while in the case of the Northeast region, three major cities, Walewale, Nalerigu and Gambaga, indulge themselves competition for the capital.
Meanwhile, sector minister Dan Botwe reacted to statements by leaders and the people of Nkoranza that the government is rejecting them.
He said no one would be allowed to stop the government from doing what is wrong with the location of capitals.
"You can not threaten or intimidate the department or the president … discussions have taken place and the right thing to do will be done. Everyone says that he will accept the president's decision and I do not know where it comes from, "he told Peace FM.
He said: "Discussions have taken place and we are not choosing anyone. Their accusations are totally baseless and an insult to my integrity. "We focus on what we do. they should be embarrbaded to make such accusations, pure tactics. "
"You insult the intelligence of the president and that is what tries to do whoever wrote this petition. If you claim that it is the prerogative of the president, what are you talking about? No one will be intimidated by this … Some people are not worried about the capital but are interested in development and they have already begun to lobby and not fight to know where the capital will be located … we focus on what we do and we know the majority of people are happy with what we do, "he added.
