Thomas Hitzlsperger has been appointed sports director of Stuttgart in the Bundesliga.

The 36-year-old former Aston Villa midfielder played 172 games with Stuttgart, winning the Bundesliga title in 2007.

He replaces Michael Reschke, who was sacked with the club sitting at the checkpoint for the relegation.

Hitzlsperger, who also played for Chesterfield, West Ham and Everton, worked as an expert on German television.

"I will do everything in my power to focus our energies so that we can stay awake and at the same time prepare for a prosperous future," said Hitzlsperger, who will work closely with his head coach, Markus Weinzierl.
