Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suffered his first defeat as interim manager of Manchester United and Paul Pogba was sent off while Angel Di Maria came back to haunt his former club and help Paris St Germain take control of the latter match of the Champions League.
The first competitive encounter between these teams had the same effect as the visitors to Old Trafford, where the Norwegian's first European match was marked by the end of his 11 games without defeat.
PSG may have been denied Neymar and Edinson Cavani, but they boasted of a player having a point to prove against United.

Di Maria took advantage of the jokes to provide remarkable help to Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe in a comfortable 2-0 first leg victory for the visitors.
As if the men of Solskjaer were not already facing a mountain on March 6th, Pogba will miss the trip to the French capital after recording a second late booking to hurt Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial.
Player ranking
Manchester United
David de Gea – 7 out of 10
United's outstanding artist, as usual. He perfectly managed to deny Mbappé, who had already frustrated the leader of the PSG in the first period.
Ashley Young – 5 out of 10
Ready to rise to the challenge, as showed the solid challenge on Di Maria, but dangerously out of reach.
Victor Lindelof – 5 out of 10
A performance to forget for the Swede, who has improved a lot, which has had little response to the movement of Mbappé, Di Maria and Draxler.
Eric Bailly – 5 out of 10
Favorite on Jones because of his speed, but this extra length counted for few times once Mbappe put the parts on hold.
Luke Shaw – 6 out of 10
Unable to support the attack as much as he would have liked, Dani Alves is aging despite everything.
Nemanja Matic – 5 out of 10
Started well, intercepting the game at key moments, but lost Kimpembe in the expensive corner. He and United have never recovered.
Paul Pogba – 6 out of 10
Marquinhos scored closely but sometimes managed to break free. A late red card prevents him from returning to Paris.
Ander Herrera – 7 out of 10
Another who started his defense well but, like many teammates, tired and exhausted as PSG began to take control.
Jesse Lingard – 7 out of 10
United's brightest field player in the first period, until his evening was shortened by an apparent injury to the hamstring. Replaced by the sinister Alexis Sanchez.
Marcus Rashford – 5 out of 10
Failing to bring its national form into the European competition and, apart from a few moments of good networking, led the line ineffectively.
Anthony Martial – 5 out of 10
A moderate presence on the left flank until, like Lingard, his evening was cut short by an injury.
Paris Saint Germain
Gianluigi Buffon – 6 out of 10
The greatest goalkeeper of his generation spent the evening undisturbed.
Thilo Kehrer – 7 out of 10
Chosen by some as a weak link potential but monitoring both Martial and Sanchez, limiting their impact.
Thiago Silva – 8 out of 10
A reminder of his former dominant self. Close the few attacks United have managed to overcome the equally impressive environment of the PSG.
Presnel Kimpembe – 7 out of 10
Having booked early to ride Rashford, he walked the tightrope and had several difficult moments, but he was largely outweighed by the goal.
Juan Bernat – 6 out of 10
The tackle on Young won a yellow. Appeared vulnerable to Lingard until his opponent was forced to leave.
Marquinhos – 8 out of 10
Sitting on Pogba when United was in possession of the ball and dominated the midfield match, strangling Solskjaer's attempts to invite visitors.
Marco Verratti – 7 out of 10
Started despite the concerns raised by an ankle injury and has behaved well under the circumstances.
Dani Alves – 6 out of 10
It's not his old marauder's self, but it's understandable at 35 years old.
Julian Draxler – 8 out of 10
Well connected to Di Maria and Mbappe who play against him, although he played no role in both goals.
Angel di Maria – 8 out of 10
Booed from his first contact and angered the nerves of the first difficult period but responded brilliantly after the break, allowing the Parisians to win the victory.
Kylian Mbappé – 8 out of 10
We had a quiet start, then suddenly hit gas, crossing United's defense and scoring a deserved goal in the second half.
